How it is produced

From feedstock to a product you can spread.

The stages below describe general composting and manure treatment practice. The exact process depends on the material used and the method applied — this is not a description of a specific Kerd Farms production line, which we will document once confirmed.

  1. 01

    Feedstock collection and selection

Choosing which materials go into the batch — the single biggest influence on the finished product.

  2. 02

    Removal of unsuitable contaminants

Taking out plastic, stones, glass and anything that will not break down.

  3. 03

    Mixing or preparation

Combining materials in proportions that allow the pile to heat and break down evenly.

  4. 04

    Composting or manure treatment

Controlled decomposition, or the appropriate treatment for the material being used.

  5. 05

    Monitoring conditions

Watching temperature and moisture where the process requires it, and turning the pile when needed.

  6. 06

    Maturation or curing

Leaving the material to settle so it is no longer actively heating before use.

  7. 07

    Quality assessment

Judging whether the material is suitable for the intended use and consistent batch to batch.

  8. 08

    Drying or moisture adjustment

Bringing moisture to a level that stores and spreads well.

  9. 09

    Sieving or screening

Removing oversized pieces so the product is uniform and easy to apply.

  10. 10

    Packaging, labelling, storage, distribution

Bagging in the agreed format, labelling it clearly, storing it dry and getting it to the farm gate.

What we do not claim

We do not describe any product as certified organic, sterilised, pathogen-free, chemically balanced or guaranteed to raise yields, and we do not recommend a product for a specific crop unless that has been verified. Where a claim needs evidence, we will show you the evidence or leave the claim out.

Illustrative packaging

Small retail bags, medium bags, large agricultural bags and bulk supply are the formats we can work with. Images on this site are illustrative until actual packaging specifications and product photographs are available — ask us for the current format.

Product education

Manure, compost and fertilizer are not the same thing.

They behave differently in the soil and are used differently. Knowing which you are buying is the difference between feeding your soil and wasting money.

Animal manure

Raw or partially treated animal waste. Rich in organic matter, but fresh manure can burn young plants and should be handled carefully around food crops.

Compost

Organic material that has been broken down under controlled conditions until it is stable, dark and crumbly. Generally safer to apply than fresh material.

Processed fertilizer

Material blended or treated to a more consistent specification, so the same bag behaves predictably from one purchase to the next.

Application rates depend on your soil, the crop and the material. Rather than publish a single rate that may not suit your land, tell us what you are growing and we will discuss what is appropriate.

Technical advice

Tell Us About Your Farm. Let’s Find the Right Solution.

Tell us what you grow, the size of the area, how you currently manage soil fertility and what you are trying to achieve. We will come back with what we can offer and, where we cannot help, we will say so.

Safety and storage

  • Store bags dry, off the ground where possible, and away from food and animal feed.
  • Wash hands after handling and keep children away from open product.
  • Follow the application guidance on the product and on any label supplied.
  • Where you are unsure about application rates, speak to an agricultural extension officer.
